See the main and extra categories the top 20 businesses use for your search, counted, and which ones you are missing.
How it works
Choose a business in the area (yours, or any near you) and what a customer would search for.
We look at the first 20 businesses Google Maps shows for that search and count which categories they use, main and extra.
You get both lists. If it is your business, we also show the categories most of the top 10 use that you do not.
Questions
Your primary category is the one Google weighs most when it decides which searches you appear for. Secondary (extra) categories add more searches, but with less weight. Pick the primary one for your main source of income.
Google allows up to 10, but add only the ones that truly describe what you offer. Two to four good ones usually beat ten loosely related ones.
Only from Google's list. You cannot type your own. Choose the closest match, and do not pick a category for a service you do not offer: that can get your profile flagged.
One Google Maps search for your keyword, around the business you picked. We count the categories of the first 20 listings. A category used by 14 of 20 is shown as 14, 70%.
Often, yes: the main category is one of the strongest signals for the map. Changes can take a few days to show, and rankings also depend on reviews, distance and your website, so expect a nudge, not a miracle.
